- Kapitel 28 -

(Leviticus 25:18–22)

If you listen carefully to the voice of Yahweh your God so as to keep all his commandments that I am commanding you today, Yahweh your God will set you above all the other nations of the earth.

All these blessings will come on you and overtake you, if you listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.

Blessed will you be in the city, and blessed will you be in the field.

Blessed will be the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground, and the fruit of your beasts, the increase of your cattle, and the young of your flock.

Blessed will be your basket and your kneading trough.

Blessed will you be when you come in, and blessed will you be when you go out.

Yahweh will cause your enemies who rise up against you to be struck down before you; they will come out against you one way but will flee before you seven ways.

Yahweh will command the blessing to come on you in your barns and in all that you put your hand to; he will bless you in the land that he is giving you.

Yahweh will establish you as a people that is set apart for himself, as he has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and walk in his ways.

All the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of Yahweh, and they will be afraid of you.

Yahweh will make you very prosperous in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your cattle, in the fruit of your ground, in the land that he swore to your fathers to give you.

Yahweh will open to you his storehouse of the heavens to give the rain for your land at the right time, and to bless all the work of your hand; you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.

Yahweh will make you the head, and not the tail; you will be only above, and you will never be beneath, if you listen to the commandments of Yahweh your God that I am commanding you today, so as to observe and to do them,

and if you do not turn away from any of the words that I am commanding you today, to the right hand or to the left, so as to go after other gods to serve them.

The Curses of Disobedience

(Leviticus 20:1–9; Leviticus 26:14–39)

But if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, so as to keep all his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you today, then all these curses will come on you and overtake you.

Cursed will you be in the city, and cursed will you be in the field.

Cursed will be your basket and your kneading trough.

Cursed will be the fruit of your body, the fruit of your ground, the increase of your cattle, and the young of your flock.

Cursed will you be when you come in, and cursed will you be when you go out.

Yahweh will send on you curses, confusion, and rebukes in all that you put your hand to, until you are destroyed, and until you perish quickly because of your wicked actions by which you will have forsaken me.

Yahweh will make the plague cling to you until he destroys you from off the land that you are going in to possess.

Yahweh will attack you with infectious diseases, with fever, with inflammation, and with drought and blistering heat, and with scorching winds and mildew. These will pursue you until you perish.

Your skies that are over your head will be bronze, and the earth that is under you will be iron.

Yahweh will make the rain of your land into powder and dust; from the heavens will it come down on you, until you are destroyed.

Yahweh will cause you to be struck down before your enemies; you will go out one way against them but will flee before them seven ways. You will be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.

Your dead body will be food to all the birds of the heavens and to the beasts of the earth; there will be no one to frighten them away.

Yahweh will attack you with the boils of Egypt and with ulcers, scurvy, and itch, from which you cannot be healed.

Yahweh will attack you with madness, with blindness, and with mental confusion.

You will grope about at noonday like the blind grope in the darkness, and you will not prosper in your ways; you will be always oppressed and robbed, and there will be no one to save you.

You will become engaged to a woman, but another man will seize her and rape her. You will build a house but not live in it; you will plant a vineyard but not enjoy its fruit.

Your ox will be slain before your eyes, but you will not eat its meat; your donkey will be forcibly taken away from before you and will not be restored to you. Your sheep will be given to your enemies, and you will have no one to aid you.

Your sons and your daughters will be given to other peoples; your eyes will look for them the entire day, but will fail with longing for them. There will be no strength in your hand.

The harvest of your land and of all your labors-a nation that you do not know will eat it up; you will always be oppressed and crushed,

so that you will become insane by what you have to see happen.

Yahweh will attack you in the knees and legs with severe boils from which you cannot be cured, from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head.

Yahweh will take you and the king whom you will place over yourself to a nation that you have not known, neither you nor your ancestors; there you will worship other gods of wood and stone.

You will become a source of horror, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples where Yahweh will lead you away.

You will take much seed out into the field, but will gather little seed in, for the locusts will consume it.

You will plant vineyards and cultivate them, but you will neither drink any of the wine, nor even gather in the grapes, for worms will eat them.

You will have olive trees within all your territory, but you will not rub any of the oil on yourself, for your olive trees will drop their fruit.

You will have sons and daughters, but they will not remain yours, for they will go into captivity.

All your trees and the fruit of your ground-the locusts will take them over.

The foreigner who is among you will rise up above you higher and higher; you yourself will come down lower and lower.

He will lend to you, but you will not lend to him; he will be the head, and you will be the tail.

All these curses will come on you and will pursue and overtake you until you are destroyed. This will happen because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God, so as to keep his commandments and his regulations that he commanded you.

These curses will be on you as signs and wonders, and on your descendants forever.

Because you did not worship Yahweh your God with joyfulness and gladness of heart when you were in prosperity,

therefore will you serve the enemies that Yahweh will send against you; you will serve them in hunger, in thirst, in nakedness, and in poverty. He will put a yoke of iron on your neck until he destroys you.

Yahweh will bring a nation against you from far away, from the ends of the earth, like an eagle flies to its victim, a nation whose language you do not understand;

a nation with a fierce face that does not respect the aged and does not show favor to the young.

They will eat the young of your cattle and the fruit of your land until you are destroyed. They will leave for you no grain, new wine, or oil, no young of your cattle or of your flock, until they have caused you to perish.

They will besiege you in all your city gates, until your high and fortified walls come down everywhere in your land, walls in which you had trusted. They will besiege you within all your city gates throughout all the land that Yahweh your God had given you.

You will eat the fruit of your own body, the flesh of your sons and of your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave you, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies will put upon you.

The man who is tender and very delicate among you-he will be envious of his brother and his own dear wife, and of whatever children he has left.

So he will not give to any of them the flesh of his own children that he is going to eat, because he will have nothing left for himself in the siege and in the distress which your enemy will put upon you within all your city gates.

The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not venture to put the bottom of her foot on the ground for delicateness and tenderness-she will be envious of her own dear husband, of her son, and of her daughter,

and of her own newborn that comes out from between her legs, and of the children whom she will bear. She will eat them in private for lack of anything else, during the siege and in the distress which your enemy will put upon you within your city gates.

If you do not keep all the words of this law that are written in this book, so as to honor this glorious and fearful name, Yahweh your God,

then Yahweh will make your plagues terrible, and those of your descendants; they will be great plagues, of long duration, and severe diseases, of long duration.

He will bring on you again all the diseases of Egypt that you were afraid of; they will cling to you.

Also every sickness and plague that is not written in the book of this law, those also Yahweh will bring on you until you are destroyed.

You will be left few in number, although you were like the stars of the heavens in number, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.

As Yahweh once rejoiced over you in doing you good, and in multiplying you, so he will rejoice over you in making you perish and in destroying you. You will be plucked off the land that you are going into to possess.

Yahweh will scatter you among all peoples from the one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; there you will worship other gods that you have not known, neither you nor your ancestors, gods of wood and stone.

Among these nations will you find no ease, and there will be no rest for the bottoms of your feet; instead, Yahweh will give you there a trembling heart, failing eyes, and a soul that mourns.

Your life will hang in doubt before you; you will fear every night and day and will have no certainty at all in your life.

In the morning you will say, ‘I wish it were evening!’ and in the evening you will say, ‘I wish it were morning!’ because of the fear in your hearts and the things your eyes will have to see.

Yahweh will bring you into Egypt again by ships, by the route about which I had said to you, ‘You will not see Egypt again.’ There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will purchase you.”

Segnungen bei Gehorsam

(3. Mose 25,18-22)

Wenn du aber auf die Stimme des Herrn, deines Gottes, hörst, dass du alle seine Gebote hältst und beobachtest, die ich dir heute darlege, so wird dich der Herr, dein Gott, erhaben machen über alle Völker, die auf Erden sind.

Und es werden alle Segnungen über dich kommen und dir zu Teil werden, jedoch nur wenn du seinen Geboten gehorchest.

Gesegnet wirst du sein in der Stadt, und gesegnet auf dem Felde.

Gesegnet die Frucht deines Leibes, und die Frucht deines Landes, und die Frucht deines Viehes, die Herden deiner Rinder, und die Ställe deiner Schafe.

Gesegnet deine Scheunen, und gesegnet dein Vorrat.

Gesegnet wirst du sein, wenn du eingehst und wenn du ausgehst.

Der Herr wird deine Feinde, die sich wider dich erheben, vor deinen Augen zu Falle bringen; auf einem Wege werden sie gegen dich herankommen und auf sieben Wegen werden sie vor dir fliehen.

Der Herr wird über deine Vorratskammern Segen senden und über alle Werke deiner Hände; und er wir dich segnen im Lande, das du erhalten wirst.

Der Herr wird dich zu seinem heiligen Volke erheben, wie er dir geschworen hat, wenn du die Gebote des Herrn, deines Gottes, hältst und auf seinen Wegen wandelst.

Dann werden alle Völker der Erde sehen, dass der Name des Herrn über dir angerufen ist, und werden dich fürchten.

Der Herr wird dir Überfluss geben an allen Gütern, an der Frucht deines Leibes, an der Frucht deines Viehes, und an der Frucht deines Landes, welches der Herr deinen Vätern eidlich versprochen hat, dir zu geben.

Seine beste Schatzkammer, den Himmel, wird der Herr auftun, um deinem Lande Regen zu geben zu seiner Zeit; und wird alle Werke deiner Hände segnen. Und du wirst vielen Völkern leihen können und wirst selbst von niemand entlehnen müssen.

Zum Haupte und nicht zum Schweife wird dich der Herr machen; und du wirst allezeit oben und nicht unten sein, jedoch nur, wenn du den Geboten des Herrn, deines Gottes, die ich dir heute auferlege, gehorsam bist, und sie hältst und tust,

und nicht von ihnen abweichst, weder zur Rechten, noch zur Linken, und nicht andern Göttern nachgehst, und sie verehrst.

Flüche bei Ungehorsam

(3. Mose 20,1-9; 3. Mose 26,14-39)

Wenn du aber der Stimme des Herrn, deines Gottes, nicht gehorchen willst, um alle seine Gebote und Vorschriften, die ich dir heute auferlege, zu tun und zu halten, so werden alle diese Flüche über dich kommen und dich treffen.

Verflucht wirst du sein in der Stadt, verflucht auf dem Felde.

Verflucht deine Scheune und verflucht dein Vorrat.

Verflucht die Frucht deines Leibes und die Frucht deines Landes, die Herden deiner Rinder und die Herden deiner Schafe.

Verflucht wirst du sein, wenn du eingehst, und verflucht, wenn du ausgehst.

Hunger und Entbehrung wird der Herr über dich senden, und Strafgerichte über alle deine Werke, die du tun wirst; bis er dich aufreibt und schnell vertilgt um all deiner bösen Handlungen willen, durch welche du mich verlassen hast.

Dazu sende der Herr die Pest über dich, bis sie dich aus dem Lande vertilgt, in das du ziehst, es in Besitz zu nehmen.

Der Herr schlage dich mit Armut, mit Fieber, und Kälte, mit Hitze, und Dürre, und mit verdorbener Luft, und Getreidebrand, und verfolge dich, bis du vernichtet bist.

Der Himmel über dir werde von Erz, und die Erde, auf die du trittst, von Eisen.

Statt des Regens gebe der Herr deinem Lande Staub, und Asche falle über dich vom Himmel, bis du vertilgt bist.

Der Herr lasse dich vor deinen Feinden zu Falle kommen; auf einem Wege mögest du gegen sie ausziehen und auf sieben fliehen, und mögest zerstreut werden in alle Reiche der Erde;

und dein Leichnam diene allen Vögeln des Himmels, und den Tieren der Erde zur Speise, und niemand möge da sein, sie wegzuscheuchen.

Der Herr schlage dich mit dem Geschwür Ägyptens und an dem Teile des Leibes, welcher den Unrat abführt, auch mit Grind und Krätze, so dass du nicht geheilt werden kannst.

Der Herr schlage dich mit Wahnwitz und Blindheit und Raserei,

und du mögest am hellen Mittage tappen, wie ein Blinder in der Finsternis zu tappen pflegt, und den richtigen Weg nicht finden. Du mögest allezeit Unterdrückung dulden und Gewalt erleiden, und niemanden haben, der dich befreie.

Du mögest dir ein Weib nehmen, und ein anderer möge ihr beiwohnen. Du mögest ein Haus bauen und nicht darin wohnen; du mögest einen Weinberg pflanzen und die Lese nicht halten.

Dein Rind vor deinen Augen geschlachtet, und du sollst nicht davon essen. Dein Esel werde dir vor deinen Augen geraubt und möge dir nicht mehr zurückgegeben werden. Deine Schafe mögen deinen Feinden ausgeliefert werden, und niemand sei da, der dir beistehe.

Deine Söhne und deine Töchter mögen einem andern Volke übergeben werden; deine Augen sollen es sehen und mögen nach ihrem Anblicke den ganzen Tag schmachten, und deine Hand möge kraftlos sein.

Die Früchte deines Landes, und alles, was du erarbeitest, möge ein Volk verzehren, das du nicht kennst; und du mögest immer Schmach erleiden und unterdrückt sein alle Tage,

und mögest außer dir sein vor Schrecken über die Dinge, die deine Augen sehen werden.

Der Herr möge dich mit bösen Geschwüren an den Knien und an den Waden schlagen, dass du von der Fußsohle bis zum Scheitel nicht geheilt werden könnest.

Der Herr wird dich und deinen König, den du über dich setzen wirst, zu einem Volke führen, das dir und deinen Vätern unbekannt ist, und du wirst dort fremden Göttern, Holz und Stein dienen.

Und du wirst verloren sein, zum Sprüchworte und zur Spottrede bei allen Völkern werden, zu denen dich der Herr führen wird.

Vielen Samen wirst du in die Erde werfen und wenig einsammeln; denn die Heuschrecken werden alles fressen.

Du wirst Weinberge pflanzen und umgraben, aber keinen Wein trinken, noch irgendetwas davon einbringen; denn er wird von den Würmern verwüstet werden.

Du wirst Ölbäume in deinem ganzen Gebiete haben und dich nicht mit Öl salben; den sie werden absterben und zu Grunde gehen.

Söhne und Töchter wirst du zeugen und dich ihrer nicht erfreuen; denn sie werden in Gefangenschaft weggeführt werden.

Alle deine Bäume und die Früchte deines Bodens wird der Brand verzehren.

Der Fremdling, der bei dir im Lande weilt, wird sich über dich erheben und höher stehen; du aber wirst herabkommen und niedriger werden.

Er wird dir leihen, und du wirst nichts haben, es ihm zu leihen. Er wird das Haupt und du der Schweif werden.

Und alle diese Flüche werden über dich kommen, und werden dich verfolgen und dich treffen, bis du zu Grunde gehst; weil du der Stimme des Herrn, deines Gottes, nicht gehorcht, noch seine Gebote und Vorschriften gehalten hast, die er dir geboten hat.

Und Zeichen und Wunder werden an dir, und an deinen Nachkommen ewiglich geschehen.

und weil du dem Herrn, deinem Gott, nicht dienen wolltest in Freude und Wonne des Herzens, als du alles in Überfluss hattest,

sollst du deinem Feinde, den der Herr über dich senden wird, dienstbar sein in Hunger und Durst, und Blöße, und aller Not; er wird dir ein eisernes Joch auf den Nacken legen, bis er dich vernichtet.

Der Herr wird ein Volk über dich aus der Ferne herbeiführen, von den äußersten Enden der Erde, das mit dem Fluge des Adlers daherstürzt, dessen Sprache du nicht zu verstehen vermagst;

ein grausames Volk, das des Greises nicht schont, und nicht Erbarmen hat mit dem Kinde,

und die Frucht deines Viehes und die Früchte deines Landes verzehrt, bis du zu Grunde gehst; und das dir kein Getreide, noch Wein, noch Öl, noch Rinder und Schafherden lässt, bis es dich vertilgt

und dich in allen deinen Städten aufreibt, und bis deine festen und hohen Mauern zerstört werden, auf welche du dich in deinem ganzen Lande verließest. Du wirst innerhalb deiner Tore eingeschlossen werden in deinem ganzen Lande, welches der Herr, dein Gott, dir geben wird,

und wirst die Frucht deines Leibes, und das Fleisch deiner Söhne und deiner Töchter, welche der Herr, dein Gott, dir gegeben hat, in der Angst und Not, in die dein Feind dich stürzen wird, verzehren.

Wer unter dir verzärtelt und sehr weichlich ist, wird seinem Bruder, oder dem Weibe, das an seinem Busen liegt, nichts vergönnen,

so dass er ihnen vom Fleische seiner Söhne, das er ißt, nicht gibt; weil er nichts anderes hat bei der Umschließung und der Not, mit der deine Feinde dich heimsuchen werden in allen deinen Toren.

Das weichliche und verzärtelte Weib, das die Erde nicht betreten und vor allzu großer Verzärtelung und Verweichlichung ihren Fuß nicht auf dieselbe zu setzen vermochte, wird ihrem Manne, der an ihrem Busen liegt, nicht das Fleisch des Sohnes und der Tochter gönnen;

ja nicht einmal die schmutzige Nachgeburt, welches aus ihres Schoßes Mitte hervorgeht, noch die Kinder, die in jener Stunde geboren werden; denn wegen des Mangels an allen Dingen werden sie dieselben insgeheim verzehren bei der Belagerung und Verheerung, mit der dein Feind dich innerhalb deiner Tore bedrängen wird.

Wenn du nicht alle Worte dieses Gesetzes, welche in diesem Buche geschrieben sind, hältst und tust, und seinen herrlichen und schrecklichen Namen, das ist den Herrn, deinen Gott, nicht fürchtest,

so wird der Herr deine und deiner Nachkommen Plagen noch vermehren mit großen und anhaltenden Plagen, bösartigen und andauernden Krankheiten.

Und er wird alle Trübsale Ägyptens über dich kommen lassen, vor denen du dich fürchtetest, und diese werden dir anhaften;

überdies wird der Herr alle Krankheiten und Plagen, von welchen in dem Buche dieses Gesetzes nicht geschrieben ist, über dich bringen, bis er dich vertilgt;

und euer werden nur wenige an Zahl übrigbleiben, die ihr vorher den Sternen des Himmels an Menge gleich waret, weil du der Stimme des Herrn, deines Gottes, nicht gehorcht hast.

Und wie der Herr zuvor seine Freude daran fand, euch wohl zu tun und euch zu mehren, so wird er alsdann Freude daran finden, euch zu zerstreuen und auszurotten, damit ihr aus dem Lande, in das du ziehst, es in Besitz zu nehmen, hinweggeschafft werdet.

Der Herr wird dich unter alle Völker, von einem Ende der Erde bis zum andern, zerstreuen; und du wirst dort fremden Göttern dienen, die dir und deinen Vätern unbekannt sind, Holz und Steinen.

Auch unter jenen Völkern wirst du keine Ruhe finden, und dein Fuß wird keine Stätte finden, wo er rasten könnte; denn der Herr wird dir daselbst ein zaghaftes Herz geben, und abnehmende Augen, und eine Seele, die von Gram verzehrt wird.

Dein Leben wird sein, wie wenn es vor dir in der Schwebe hinge. Tag und Nacht wirst du dich fürchten und deines Lebens nicht sicher sein.

Am Morgen wirst du sagen: Wer gibt mir den Abend? Und am Abend: Wer gibt mir den Morgen? Vor der Furcht deines Herzens, die dich erschrecken wird, und um aller Dinge willen, die deine Augen werden sehen müssen.

Der Herr wird dich auf Schiffen nach Ägypten zurückbringen, auf dem Wege, von dem er dir gesagt hat, du solltest ihn nicht mehr schauen. Dort wirst du deinen Feinden zu Knechten und Mägden verkauft werden, und niemand wird sein, der dich kaufen mag.
