- Kapitel 13 -

(Deuteronomy 15:19–23)

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

“Sanctify to me every firstborn which opens the womb among the sons of Israel, as much of men as of cattle. For they are all mine.”(a)

And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day, on which you were taken away from Egypt and from the house of servitude. For with a strong hand the Lord has led you away from this place. Thus, you shall eat no leavened bread.

Today, you go forth in the month of new grain.

And when the Lord has brought you into the land of the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your fathers that he would give to you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you will celebrate this manner of sacred rites in this month.

For seven days, you shall feed on unleavened bread. And on the seventh day, it will be the solemnity of the Lord.

You shall consume unleavened bread for seven days. There shall not be seen anything leavened with you, nor in all your parts.

And you will explain to your son in that day, saying: ‘This is what the Lord did for me when I was taken away from Egypt.’

And it will be like a sign in your hand and like a memorial before your eyes. And so may the law of the Lord be always in your mouth. For with a strong hand, the Lord led you away from the land of Egypt.

You will keep this observance, at the established time, from day to day.

And when the Lord has brought you into the land of the Canaanite, just as he swore to you and to your fathers, and when he will give it you,

then you shall set aside for the Lord all that opens the womb and all that is first to go forth among your cattle. Whatever you will have of the male sex, you shall consecrate to the Lord.

The firstborn of a donkey you will exchange for a sheep. And if you will not redeem it, you shall put it to death. But every firstborn of man among your sons, you shall redeem with a price.

And when your son will question you tomorrow, saying, ‘What is this?’ you will respond, ‘With a strong hand the Lord led us away from the land of Egypt, from the house of servitude.

For when Pharaoh had been hardened and was unwilling to release us, the Lord killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man, even to the firstborn of beasts. For this reason, I immolate to the Lord all of the male sex that opens the womb, and all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’

Therefore, it will be like a sign in your hand and like something hanging between your eyes as a remembrance, because with a strong hand the Lord has led us away from Egypt.”

The Pillars of Cloud and Fire

And so, when Pharaoh had sent the people away, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, which is nearby, considering that perhaps they might relapse, if they saw wars rise up against them, and then they might return to Egypt.

But he led them around by the way of the desert, which is next to the Red Sea. And so the sons of Israel ascended, armed, out of the land of Egypt.

Also, Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, because he had sworn to the sons of Israel, saying: “God will visit you. Carry my bones away from here with you.”

And setting out from Soccoth, they encamped at Etham, in the most distant parts of the wilderness.

Now the Lord preceded them to show them the way, by day with a pillar of cloud, and by night with a pillar of fire, so that he might be the leader of their journey at both times.

These never failed: a pillar of cloud by day, and a pillar of fire by night, in the sight of the people.

Die Erstgeborenen geweiht

(5. Mose 15,19-23)

Und der Herr redete zu Moses und sprach:

Weihe mir alles Erstgeborene, das unter den Söhnen Israels den Mutterleib öffnet, Menschen oder Tiere; denn mein ist alles.

Das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote

Und Moses sprach zum Volke: Gedenket dieses Tages, an welchem ihr aus Ägypten, aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft, gezogen seid, denn mit starker Hand hat euch der Herr von dort weggeführt; darum sollt ihr kein gesäuertes Brot essen!

Heute, im Monate der neuen Früchte, zieht ihr aus.

Und wenn dich der Herr in das Land der Chanaaniter, Hethiter, Amorrhiter, Heviter, und Jebusiter führt, das er dir geben will, wie er deinen Vätern geschworen hat, das Land, welches von Milch und Honig fließt, so sollst du diese heilige Sitte in diesem Monat beobachten.

Sieben Tage sollst du ungesäuertes Brot essen; und am siebenten Tage soll ein Fest des Herrn sein.

Ungesäuertes Brot sollt ihr sieben Tage essen; nichts Gesäuertes soll sich bei dir vorfinden in deinem gesamten Gebiete.

Und an jenem Tage sollst du deinem Sohne erzählen und sagen: Dies geschieht für das, was mir der Herr erwiesen hat, als ich aus Ägypten auszog.

Und es sei dir wie ein Zeichen auf deiner Hand, und wie ein Gedenkzeichen vor deinen Augen, und damit das Gesetz des Herrn stets in deinem Munde sei; denn mit starker Hand hat dich der Herr aus Ägypten geführt,

Beobachte diese Satzung zur festgesetzten Zeit von Jahr zu Jahr.

Das Gesetz der Erstgeburt

Und wenn dich der Herr in das Land der Chanaaniter gebracht hat, wie er es dir und deinen Vätern geschworen hat, und es dir gibt,

so sollst du alles, was zuerst den Mutterleib öffnet, und das Erstgeborene unter deinem Vieh, dem Herrn absondern; was immer männlichen Geschlechtes ist, sollst du dem Herrn weihen.

Die Erstgeburt des Esels sollst du mit einem Schafe auswechseln; wenn du sie aber nicht auslösest, sollst du sie töten. Aber jeden Erstgebornen unter deinen Söhnen sollst du mit Geld auslösen.

Und wenn dich dein Sohn dereinst fragt und sagt: Was ist dies? So sollst du ihm antworten: Mit starker Hand hat uns der Herr aus dem Lande Ägypten, aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft, weggeführt.

Denn als Pharao verhärtet war und uns nicht ziehen lassen wollte, tötete der Herr alle Erstgeburt im Lande Ägypten, sowohl die Erstgeborenen der Menschen, wie die Erstgeburt des Viehes; darum bringe ich dem Herrn alles Männliche, was den Mutterleib öffnet, zum Opfer und lose jeden Erstgebornen unter meinen Söhnen aus.

Es soll dir also wie ein Zeichen an deiner Hand sein, und wie ein Gedenkzeichen, das zwischen deinen Augen hängt, daran, dass der Herr uns mit starker Hand aus Ägypten weggeführt hat.

Der Weg durch die Wüste

Als nun Pharao das Volk hatte ziehen lassen, führte Gott sie nicht auf dem Wege durch das Gebiet der Philister, welcher der nächste ist; denn er gedachte, es möchte das Volk reuen, wenn es sich in Kampf verwickelt sähe, und es möchte wieder nach Ägypten zurückkehren;

sondern er führte sie auf einem Umwege durch die Wüste am roten Meere; und die Söhne Israels zogen gewaffnet aus dem Lande Ägypten.

Auch nahm Moses die Gebeine Josephs mit sich, weil dieser die Söhne Israels beschworen und gesprochen hatte: Gott wird euch heimsuchen; alsdann führet meine Gebeine von hier mit euch hinweg.

Und sie brachen von Sokoth auf und lagerten sich in Etham, am äußersten Rande der Wüste.

Der Herr aber zog vor ihnen her, um ihnen den Weg zu zeigen, des Tags in einer Wolkensäule, und des Nachts in einer Feuersäule; um ihr Führer auf dem Zuge zu sein, bei Tag und bei Nacht.

Niemals wich die Wolkensäule bei Tag, oder die Feuersäule bei Nacht von dem Volke.
