- Kapitel 20 -

(Deuteronomy 5:6–21)

And the Lord spoke all these words:

“I am the Lord your God, who led you away from the land of Egypt, out of the house of servitude.

You shall not have strange gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself a graven image, nor a likeness of anything that is in heaven above or on earth below, nor of those things which are in the waters under the earth.(a)

You shall not adore them, nor shall you worship them. I am the Lord your God: strong, zealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my precepts.

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. For the Lord will not hold harmless one who takes the name of the Lord his God falsely.

Remember that you are to sanctify the day of the Sabbath.

For six days, you will work and accomplish all your tasks.

But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work in it: you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, your beast and the newcomer who is within your gates.

For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all the things that are in them, and so he rested on the seventh day. For this reason, the Lord has blessed the day of the Sabbath and sanctified it.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may have a long life upon the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.

You shall not murder.(b)

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not speak false testimony against your neighbor.

You shall not covet the house of your neighbor; neither shall you desire his wife, nor male servant, nor female servant, nor ox, nor donkey, nor anything that is his.”

Moses Comforts the People

(Deuteronomy 5:22–33; Hebrews 12:18–29)

Then all the people considered the voices, and the lights, and the sound of the trumpet, and the smoking mountain. And being terrified and struck with fear, they stood at a distance,

saying to Moses: “Speak to us, and we will listen. Let not the Lord speak to us, lest perhaps we may die.”

And Moses said to the people: “Do not be afraid. For God came in order to test you, and so that the dread of him might be with you, and you would not sin.”

And the people stood far away. But Moses approached toward the mist, in which was God.

Idolatry Forbidden

(1 Corinthians 10:14–22)

Thereafter, the Lord said to Moses: “This you shall say to the sons of Israel: You have seen that I have spoken to you from heaven.

You shall not make gods of silver, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold.

You shall make an altar from the earth for me, and you shall offer upon it your holocausts and peace-offerings, your sheep and oxen, in every place where the memory of my name shall be. I will come to you, and I will bless you.

And if you make an altar of stone for me, you shall not build it from cut stones; for if you lift up a tool over it, it will be defiled.

You shall not ascend by steps to my altar, lest your nakedness be revealed.”

(a)20:4 A graven thing, nor the likeness of any thing, etc:All such images, or likenesses, are forbidden by this commandment, as are made to be adored and served; according to that which immediately follows, you shall not adore them, nor serve them. That is, all such as are designed for idols or image-gods, or are worshipped with divine honour. But otherwise images, pictures, or representations, even in the house of God, and in the very sanctuary so far from being forbidden, are expressly authorized by the word of God. (b)20:13 The word ‘occides’ can refer to killing, or more specifically to murdering. The ideal is to have a society where there is no killing at all (even without killing in war, or in law enforcement, or in self-defense), but the minimum requirement of the commandment is not to murder.(Conte)

Die Zehn Gebote

(5. Mose 5,6-21)

Und der Herr redete alle diese Worte:

Ich bin der Herr, dein Gott, der dich aus dem Lande Ägypten, aus dem Hause der Knechtschaft, geführt hat.

Du sollst keine andern Götter neben mir haben.

Du sollst dir kein Bild machen, noch ein Gleichnis von etwas, was im Himmel oben, oder auf der Erde unten, oder was im Wasser unter der Erde ist.

Du sollst sie nicht anbeten, noch verehren; ich der Herr, dein Gott, bin ein starker und eifernder Gott, der die Sünden der Väter an den Kindern heimsucht bis ins dritte und vierte Geschlecht derer, die mich hassen;

und Barmherzigkeit bis ins tausendste Glied denen erweist, die mich lieben und meine Gebote halten.

Du sollst den Namen des Herrn, deines Gottes, nicht eitel nennen; denn der Herr wird den nicht ungestraft lassen, der den Namen des Herrn, seines Gottes, ohne Grund ausspricht.

Gedenke daran, den Sabbattag heilig zu halten.

Sechs Tage sollst du arbeiten und alle deine Werke verrichten.

Aber am siebenten Tage ist der Sabbat des Herrn, deines Gottes; an diesem sollst du keine Arbeit verrichten, weder du selber, noch dein Sohn, noch deine Tochter, noch dein Knecht, noch deine Magd, noch dein Vieh, noch der Fremdling, der innerhalb deiner Tore ist.

Denn in sechs Tagen hat der Herr den Himmel und die Erde, das Meer, und alles, was in ihnen ist, gemacht, aber am siebenten Tage ruhte er; darum segnete Gott den Sabbattag und heiligte ihn.

Ehre deinen Vater und deine Mutter, auf dass du lange lebest im Lande, welches dir der Herr, dein Gott, geben wird.

Du sollst nicht töten.

Du sollst nicht ehebrechen.

Du sollst nicht stehlen.

Du sollst kein falsches Zeugnis gegen deinen Nächsten reden.

Du sollst nicht das Haus deines Nächsten begehren, du sollst nicht sein Weib, noch auch seinen Knecht, seine Magd, seinen Ochsen, seinen Esel, oder irgendetwas, was sein ist, begehren.

Das Volk fürchtet sich vor der Gegenwart Gottes

(5. Mose 5,22-33; Hebräer 12,18-29)

Als das ganze Volk die Donnerschläge und die Blitze, den Schall der Posaunen, und den rauchenden Berg gewahrte, ward es von Schrecken und Entsetzen ergriffen, und blieb in der Ferne stehen,

und sprach zu Moses: Sprich du mit uns, und wir werden hören; der Herr aber rede nicht mit uns, wir möchten sonst sterben.

Da erwiderte Moses dem Volke: Fürchtet euch nicht! Denn um euch zu prüfen, ist Gott gekommen, und damit seine Furcht euch innewohne, dass er nicht sündiget.

Das Volk blieb also in der Ferne stehen. Moses aber nahte sich dem Dunkel, in dem sich Gott befand.

Das Gesetz des Altars

(1. Korinther 10,14-22)

Da sprach der Herr weiter zu Moses: Also sprich zu den Söhnen Israels: Ihr habt gesehen, dass ich vom Himmel zu euch geredet habe.

Machet euch keine Götter aus Silber und machet euch keine Götter aus Gold.

Einen Altar von Erde sollt ihr mir machen und auf diesem eure Brandopfer und Friedopfer, eure Schafe und Rinder darbringen an jedem Orte, wo eine Gedenkstätte meines Namens sein wird. Dort werde ich zu dir kommen und dich segnen.

Wenn du mir aber einen Altar aus Stein machen willst, so baue ihn nicht von gehauenen Steinen auf; denn wenn du ein Eisen darüber erhebst, so wird er entweiht sein.

Du sollst auch nicht auf Stufen zu meinem Altare aufsteigen, damit deine Blöße nicht enthüllt werde.
